Listening to His Voice

Here I was getting ready for work only to realize it was getting late and I was about to miss my train. My immediate thought was to drop everything and rush through the door.

I was about to do that when the thought hit me to just go ahead and finalize my preparations.

I thought about it for a moment and decided to finalize my preparations; I knew that if I jogged afterwards I would still be able to catch my train.

So, after I was done, I bid my family farewell and walked briskly to the station. On my arrival I found out that my train was delayed by 10 minutes. The very train I would be rushing to catch, arrived at the station a few minutes after I got there.

In the Bible in the book of John 10:27 (KJV) it says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”

Here we find Jesus referring to us as sheep, and not followers. The audience at the time would have pictured the shepherds that they knew.

These shepherds often got together with their sheep at various times during the day. They may stop at a watering hole or stream. While they are catching up on events, their sheep would get some water to drink. It was often a noisy and chaotic scene. However, when it was time to go, the shepherds would call for their sheep.

The sheep would follow their own shepherds to a safe place to sleep. Amidst the chaos (bleating and chatter) the sheep would hear their shepherd’s voice, recognize it, and follow him.

Jesus was describing himself as a shepherd; we, His followers are the sheep. “My sheep hear my voice,” he says, “I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.”

Many voices are competing for our attention. However, Jesus wants us to know, it is only the voice of the shepherd that can lead us home to safety.

In Revelation 3:20 we find Jesus saying, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”

This invitation is extended to us. We are invited to hear His voice, listen to His bidding, open our minds to Him and follow Him.

When we choose the Lord as our shepherd, we will discover that there is nothing else we would want. His goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our life. We will dwell in the house of the Lord. Forever. Amen.
